Renal Regulation

Renal regulation is the set of processes by which the kidneys maintain stable internal conditions, including fluid volume, electrolyte concentrations, acid-base balance, and blood pressure. Within nephrons, glomerular filtration removes water and small solutes from blood, while selective tubular reabsorption returns needed substances and secretion adds wastes to the forming urine; hormones such as antidiuretic hormone and aldosterone adjust these processes according to the body’s needs. This regulation supports cellular function and cardiovascular stability, and its study helps explain disorders involving dehydration, hypertension, electrolyte imbalance, and impaired kidney function.

Renal Regulation of Acid-Base Balance

Metabolic reactions in the body produce nonvolatile acids, such as sulfuric acid, which generate an acid load of approximately 1 mEq of H+ per kilogram of body weight daily. Excreting H+ in the urine is essential to balance this acid load. In the kidneys, cells within the proximal convoluted tubules (PCT) and the collecting ducts secrete hydrogen ions (H+) into the tubular fluid. Specifically, in the PCT, Na+/H+ antiporters secrete H+ while reabsorbing Na+. However, the intercalated cells in...

Early stage hemodynamic dysfunction is critical to the development of kidney disease. Yet, detection methodologies are limited. Recent advances in sonography provide a noninvasive, accurate option for early detection of kidney injury. This study outlines a step-by-step, sonographic methodology for detecting kidney dysfunction using a drug-induced nephrotoxicity rat model.

The renin-aldosterone system is an endocrine system which guides the renal absorption of water and electrolytes, thus managing blood pressure and osmoregulation. Activation of the system begins in the kidneys with a small cluster of cells adjacent to the afferent and efferent blood vessels of the renal corpuscle. As the nephrons are filtering blood, juxtaglomerular cells monitor blood pressure. If they detect a decrease in pressure, they release the hormone renin into the bloodstream.
