Stomata Observation

Stomata observation is the examination of microscopic pores on plant surfaces to understand how plants exchange gases and regulate water loss. Using techniques such as epidermal peels, light microscopy, or replicas, researchers visualize stomatal pores and guard cells, whose changes in turgor control opening and closing in response to light, carbon dioxide, and water availability. Observing stomatal density, distribution, and aperture helps students connect plant structure with photosynthesis, transpiration, and environmental adaptation. In research, these measurements support studies of drought stress, plant productivity, climate responses, and the mechanisms governing gas exchange between leaves and the atmosphere.

Regulation of Transpiration by Stomata

During photosynthesis, plants acquire the necessary carbon dioxide and release the produced oxygen back into the atmosphere. Openings in the epidermis of plant leaves is the site of this exchange of gasses. A single opening is called a stoma—derived from the Greek word for “mouth.” Stomata open and close in response to a variety of environmental cues. Each stoma is flanked by two specialized guard cells that create an opening when these cells take up water. The transport of ions regulates the...

Source: Laboratories of Gary Lewandowski, Dave Strohmetz, and Natalie Ciarocco—Monmouth University If you want to know how someone thinks or feels, you can ask that person questions. Another approach is to observe how the person is acting or look for indicators of how they acted in the past. While observations may seem revealing, it isn’t always easy to know if they are truly accurate. For instance, you may see a person smiling and assume they are happy, when in reality they are annoyed and...

Naturalistic Observations

If you want to understand how behavior occurs, one of the best ways to gain information is to simply observe the behavior in its natural context. However, people might change their behavior in unexpected ways if they know they are being observed. How do researchers obtain accurate information when people tend to hide their natural behavior? As an example, imagine that your professor asks everyone in your class to raise their hand if they always wash their hands after using the restroom. Chances...

Source: Jaideep S. Talwalkar, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT Observation and inspection is fundamental to physical examination and begins at the first point of contact with a patient. While observation and inspection are often used interchangeably, observation is a general term that refers to the careful use of one's senses to gain information. Inspection is an act limited to what one can observe visually, and when referring to physical examination,...
