Transwell Filter Seeding

Transwell filter seeding is a cell-culture technique that places cells onto a porous membrane insert, allowing researchers to study cells at an air-liquid or compartmental interface. Cells are carefully suspended and distributed across the upper surface of the filter, where they attach and grow while nutrients and signaling molecules can pass through membrane pores from the underlying medium. This arrangement separates cell populations into distinct upper and lower chambers and supports controlled analysis of migration, barrier formation, permeability, and cell-cell communication. In biology, Transwell filter seeding is widely used to model epithelial and endothelial barriers, investigate tissue interactions, and evaluate how compounds or biological signals influence cellular behavior.

The Transwell Migration Assay

2023

Cells migration in response to chemical cues is crucial to development, immunity and disease states such as cancer. To quantify cell migration, a simple assay was developed in 1961 by Dr. Stephen Boyden, which is now known as the transwell migration assay or Boyden chamber assay. This set-up consists an insert which separates the wells of a multiwell plate into top and bottom compartments. Cells whose migration is to be studied are seeded into the top compartment and the chemoattractant...

Passive Filters

2024

Passive filters are utilized to shape the frequency spectrum of signals across a diverse array of applications. These filters, using only passive elements like resistors (R), inductors (L), and capacitors (C), are capable of selectively allowing or blocking certain frequency ranges without the need for external power sources. Low-Pass Filters Low-pass filters are designed to transmit signals with frequencies lower than the cutoff frequency, ωc, and attenuate those above it. The cutoff frequency...

2026

Here, we present a study to evaluate the anti-viral efficacy of copper- and silver-based surface coatings on air filters. Using a bioaerosol chamber and Phi6 bacteriophage, this method quantifies viral inactivation and mechanical filtration efficiency for self-sanitizing indoor air technologies.

Active Filters

2025

Active filters are electronic circuits that use operational amplifiers (op-amps), resistors, and capacitors to filter out unwanted frequency components from a signal. A first-order low-pass active filter is designed to pass signals with a frequency lower than a certain cutoff frequency and attenuate frequencies higher than that cutoff frequency. The transfer function for a first-order low-pass active filter is: Where Af is the gain at low frequencies also known as the dc gain, s is the...
