Trophic Ecology

Trophic ecology is the study of feeding relationships, energy transfer, and nutrient movement among organisms within ecosystems. It examines how producers, consumers, and decomposers form trophic levels and interconnected food webs, with energy moving through consumption while much of it is lost as heat and nutrients are recycled. By analyzing bottom-up effects from resource availability and top-down effects from predators, researchers can explain changes in population size, community structure, and ecosystem productivity. Trophic ecology supports research on biodiversity, conservation, fisheries, invasive species, and ecosystem responses to environmental change.

Trophic Levels

2025

All organisms in an ecosystem occupy a trophic level in the food chain. The lowest level consists of primary producers, which synthesize their food from either solar or chemical energy. Each subsequent level obtains energy from the levels below. Detritivores can occupy any of the levels above primary producers. Food Chains Within an ecosystem, energy and nutrients flow through organisms in a sequential order known as a food chain. Each organism occupies a trophic level or a specific place...

Trophic Efficiency

2025

Trophic level transfer efficiency (TLTE) is a measure of the total energy transfer from one trophic level to the next. Due to extensive energy loss as metabolic heat, an average of only 10% of the original energy obtained is passed on to the next level. This pattern of energy loss severely limits the possible number of trophic levels in a food chain. Trophic Level Transfer Efficiency Following the second law of thermodynamics, large amounts of energy are lost from the ecosystem and from one...

2014

A technique for laboratory estimation of net trophic transfer efficiency of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners to piscivorous fish from their prey is presented. To maximize applicability of the laboratory results to the field, the piscivorous fish should be fed prey fish that are typically eaten in the field.

Basic Methods for the Study of Reproductive Ecology of Fish in Aquaria

2017

A series of basic methods to enable the study of the reproductive ecology of fish kept in aquaria are described. These are useful protocols for collecting fish using SCUBA, transporting live fish, and observing the reproductive behavior of wild-caught fish kept in aquaria.

Ecological Succession

2026

Ecological succession is influenced by the processes of facilitation, inhibition, and toleration. Facilitation occurs when early successional species create more favorable ecological conditions for subsequent species, such as enhanced nutrient, water, or light availability. In contrast, inhibition happens when early successional species create unfavorable ecological conditions for potential successive species, such as limiting resource availability. In some cases, later successional species...
