Vestibular Hair Cells

Vestibular hair cells are specialized sensory receptor cells in the inner ear that detect head motion and gravity, supporting balance, posture, and spatial orientation. When head movement shifts fluid within the semicircular canals or otolith organs, mechanical forces deflect the cells’ stereocilia, opening ion channels and changing neurotransmitter release onto vestibular nerve fibers. Their signals help the brain coordinate eye movements and postural responses. Studying vestibular hair cells clarifies the biology of balance disorders, motion perception, and sensory adaptation, while supporting research into ototoxicity, hair-cell regeneration, and treatments for vestibular dysfunction.

Hair cells are the sensory receptors of the auditory system—they transduce mechanical sound waves into electrical energy that the nervous system can understand. Hair cells are located in the organ of Corti within the cochlea of the inner ear, between the basilar and tectorial membranes. The actual sensory receptors are called inner hair cells. The outer hair cells serve other functions, such as sound amplification in the cochlea, and are not discussed in detail here. Hair cells are named after...

The American bullfrog's (Rana catesbeiana) sacculus permits direct examination of hair-cell physiology. Here the dissection and preparation of the bullfrog's sacculus for biophysical studies is described. We show representative experiments from these hair cells, including the calculation of a bundle's force-displacement relation and measurement of its unforced motion.
