Wax Chemical Composition

Wax chemical composition refers to the molecular makeup of waxes, hydrophobic substances that protect surfaces and regulate interactions with water in biological and nonbiological systems. Natural waxes typically contain long-chain fatty acid esters, hydrocarbons, alcohols, and related lipids; their chain length, branching, and degree of saturation influence melting point, hardness, and water repellency. In biology, plant cuticular waxes reduce water loss and limit pathogen entry, while beeswax supports honeycomb structure and insect development. Analyzing wax composition helps researchers connect molecular structure with physical properties, environmental adaptation, and applications in biomaterials, ecology, and chemical biology.

Classifying Matter by Composition

2020

Matter: Pure Substances and Mixtures According to its composition, the matter can be classified into two broad categories — pure substances and mixtures. A pure substance is a form of matter that has a constant composition throughout with uniform properties. For example, any sample of sucrose has the same composition and same physical properties, such as melting point, color, and sweetness, regardless of the source from which it is isolated. A mixture is composed of two or more types of...

Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter

The characteristics that enable us to distinguish one substance from another are called properties. Physical Properties of Matter A physical property is a characteristic of matter that is not associated with a change in its chemical composition. Familiar examples of physical properties include density, color, hardness, melting and boiling points, and electrical conductivity. We can observe some physical properties, such as density and color, without changing the physical state of the matter...

2018

This protocol describes the procedure to express fresh pore solution from cementitious systems and the measurement of its ionic composition using X-ray fluorescence. The ionic composition can be used to calculate pore solution electrical resistivity, which can be used, together with concrete electrical resistivity, to determine the formation factor.
