Hydrophobic Barrier Pen

Hydrophobic Barrier Pen is a laboratory marking tool that draws water-repellent boundaries around tissue sections or cell samples on microscope slides, helping researchers control small-volume liquid assays. Its ink forms a hydrophobic film that resists aqueous solutions, so buffers, stains, and antibody reagents remain within the marked region instead of spreading across the slide. In cancer research, this containment supports immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and related staining workflows used to visualize tumor markers and cellular features. By reducing reagent mixing and waste while enabling multiple samples or conditions on one slide, the pen improves assay consistency and helps link molecular patterns to cancer biology and treatment studies.

Calcium-Dependent Hydrophobic Interaction Chromatography: A Technique to Purify Calcium-Binding Proteins Based on Hydrophobic Interactions

2025

In this video, we demonstrate the purification of calcium-binding protein from a dialyzed cell lysate through calcium-dependent hydrophobic interaction chromatography. The calcium-binding proteins expose a hydrophobic region upon binding with calcium, facilitating interaction with a hydrophobic group on resin. Later these proteins are eluted using calcium chelator EDTA that reverses the interaction.

Butyl-Dependant Hydrophobic Interaction Liquid Chromatography: A Technique to Characterize Antibody-Drug Conjugates Based on Hydrophobic Interactions

Source: Kirchner, K.N., et al., A Hydrophobic Tissue Clearing Method for Rat Brain Tissue. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates the method of hydrophobic tissue clearing of a rat brain tissue sample. The sample is sequentially dehydrated in methanol, treated with a dichloromethane and methanol mixture to dissolve lipids and pigments, and transferred to dibenzyl ether for complete tissue clearing, enabling detailed imaging without thin sectioning.
