Sterile Needle

A sterile needle is a needle prepared and packaged to prevent viable microorganisms from entering a sample, tissue, or experimental system, making it essential for contamination-sensitive laboratory and clinical work. During use, its sharp tip penetrates a defined site while aseptic handling and sterile equipment preserve sample integrity and reduce the risk of introducing microbes or altering experimental conditions. In cancer research, sterile needles support tumor biopsies, cell and tissue sampling, injection of investigational compounds, and collection of blood or other specimens for molecular, cellular, and pharmacological analyses. Consistent needle sterility improves reproducibility and helps protect samples and experimental models from avoidable contamination.

Burch in their book The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique. The 3 R's are replacement, reduction, and refinement of the use of animals in research. The use of cell lines and tissue cultures that originated from research animals is a replacement technique, as it allows for many experiments to be conducted in vitro. Harvesting...

Cleaning, Sterilization, and Disinfection

Cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization are the methods that help to break the infection chain and prevent disease. Cleaning The cleaning process usually involves using water with detergents or enzymatic cleaner and removing foreign material from objects and surfaces, including organic material such as body fluids or inorganic material like soil. Cleaning is performed before high-level disinfection and sterilization because foreign materials on the cover of the devices interfere with process...

Source: Julianna Jung, MD, FACEP, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA For unstable patients requiring urgent administration of medications, fluids, or blood products, establishing vascular access quickly is essential. However, there are many factors that can complicate placement of a peripheral intravenous cannula (PIV), and it is extremely common for PIV attempts to fail. PIV placement may be technically challenging in small...

Methods of Sterilization II: Chemical Methods

2023

In healthcare, the chemical method of sterilization uses chemical sterilants to treat surgical instruments and medical supplies to help prevent the transmission of infectious pathogens to patients. Due to heat sensitivity, most medical supplies and equipment should not be exposed to high temperatures. These parts include rubber, plastic, glass, and other similar elements. Using chemical sterilization rather than heat to clean out equipment is recommended. It eradicates and removes all bacteria,...

We describe here a protocol for microinjection in the rodent brain that uses quartz needles. These needles do not produce detectable tissue damage and ensure reliable delivery even in deep regions. Moreover, they can be adapted to research needs by personalized designs and can be re-used.
