Alkaloids

Alkaloids are a diverse class of nitrogen-containing organic compounds, commonly produced by plants, fungi, and some animals, and are important in chemistry because many show potent biological activity. Their nitrogen atoms often accept protons, giving alkaloids basic properties and enabling interactions with receptors, enzymes, and other cellular targets; structural features such as heterocyclic rings influence their reactivity and effects. Chemists identify and characterize alkaloids using extraction, acid-base separation, chromatography, and spectroscopic methods. Compounds such as morphine, quinine, caffeine, and nicotine illustrate their roles in medicines, stimulants, natural defense, and drug discovery, while their structural diversity continues to inform pharmaceutical and biochemical research.

An Efficient and Rapid HPLC-QQQ-MS Method for the Quantitation of Tropane Alkaloids in Medicinal Plants

2026

This study developed a high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (HPLC-QQQ-MS) method to identify and quantify tropane alkaloids (hyoscyamine, anisodamine, scopolamine) in Anisodus tanguticus. The method proved rapid, accurate, and reliable for high-throughput analysis of medicinal plants.

Gustation

2019

Gustation is a chemical sense that, along with olfaction (smell), contributes to our perception of taste. It starts with the activation of receptors by chemical compounds (tastants) dissolved in the saliva. The saliva and filiform papillae on the tongue distribute the tastants and increase their exposure to the taste receptors. Taste receptors are found on the surface of the tongue as well as on the soft palate, the pharynx, and the upper esophagus. On the tongue, taste receptors are contained...
