Iodination Reaction

Iodination reactions are chemical transformations that introduce iodine atoms into organic or inorganic molecules, producing iodinated compounds with altered reactivity, polarity, or biological behavior. Depending on the substrate, iodine can be incorporated through electrophilic substitution, addition across unsaturated bonds, or replacement of another atom; reagents, catalysts, solvent, and reaction conditions control which pathway predominates. In chemistry, iodination supports the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, contrast agents, and functional materials, while radioiodination enables molecular tracing and targeted imaging. Understanding iodine’s reactivity helps researchers select efficient, selective methods for preparing and studying complex compounds.

Reaction Quotient

2020

The status of a reversible reaction is conveniently assessed by evaluating its reaction quotient (Q). For a reversible reaction described by m A + n B ⇌ x C + y D, the reaction quotient is derived directly from the stoichiometry of the balanced equation as where the subscript c denotes the use of molar concentrations in the expression. If the reactants and products are gaseous, a reaction quotient may be similarly derived using partial pressures: Note that the reaction quotient equations...

Polarimetry finds application in chemical kinetics to measure the concentration and reaction kinetics of optically active substances during a chemical reaction. Optically active substances have the capability of rotating the plane of polarization of linearly polarized light passing through them—a feature called optical rotation. Optical activity is attributed to the molecular structure of substances. Normal monochromatic light is unpolarized and possesses oscillations of the electrical field in...

Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution: Fluorination and Iodination of Benzene

2023

Bromination and chlorination of aromatic rings by electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions are easily achieved, but fluorination and iodination are difficult to achieve. Fluorine is so reactive that its reaction with benzene is difficult to control, resulting in poor yields of monofluoroaromatic products. To address this, Selectfluor reagent is used as a fluorine source in which a fluorine atom is bonded to a positively charged nitrogen. Unlike fluorine, iodine is highly unreactive for...

Grignard Reaction

Source: Vy M. Dong and Faben Cruz, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment will demonstrate how to properly carry out a Grignard reaction. The formation of an organometallic reagent will be demonstrated by synthesizing a Grignard reagent with magnesium and an alkyl halide. To demonstrate a common use of a Grignard reagent, a nucleophilic attack onto a carbonyl will be performed to generate a secondary alcohol by forming a new C-C bond.
