Functional Status

Functional status is a person’s ability to perform the physical, cognitive, and social activities required for daily life, making it a core indicator of health, independence, and care needs. In clinical assessment, practitioners evaluate activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living through patient history, observation, performance testing, and standardized rating scales, then compare abilities over time or against an expected baseline. Functional status measures help identify disability, guide treatment and rehabilitation, estimate support requirements, and monitor recovery or decline across conditions. They also provide patient-centered outcomes that complement diagnosis and laboratory findings in clinical research and care planning.
