Embryo Desiccation

Embryo desiccation is the loss of water from an embryo, a condition that can halt development and threaten viability, while also revealing how early life withstands environmental stress. As water content declines, cellular metabolism slows and membranes, proteins, and genetic material become vulnerable to structural damage; desiccation-tolerant embryos counter these effects through protective solutes, cellular stabilization, and metabolic suppression. Studying this process in developmental biology clarifies the relationship between hydration, embryonic development, and survival. It also informs embryo preservation, reproductive technologies, conservation of vulnerable species, and research into stress-resistant biological systems.
