Accelerometer Measurement

Accelerometer measurement is the quantification of an object’s acceleration, or change in velocity over time, and is fundamental to engineering analysis of motion, vibration, and mechanical performance. In a typical sensor, an internal proof mass moves relative to the housing when the device accelerates; this motion is converted into an electrical signal through changes in capacitance, piezoelectric charge, or another transduction method. Engineers use these measurements to monitor machinery vibration, detect shocks, evaluate structural response, and support inertial navigation and motion control. Accurate interpretation requires attention to measurement range, frequency response, sensitivity, mounting, and environmental noise.

Assessment of Physical Activity Intensity with Accelerometers and Oxygen Consumption

2025

Here, we present a protocol to assess physical activity intensity levels measured with indirect calorimetry and two accelerometers (on the right wrist and waist) during an incremental walking-jogging test (from 0.84 to 2.37 m/s) on an oval track. The results show differences among the physical intensity assessed through those methods.

Optimized sampling protocols and the development of new wipe materials can be facilitated by standardized measurements of collection efficiency from wipe-sampling. Our approach for sampling trace explosives uses an automated device to control speed, force, and distance during wipe-sampling followed by extraction of collected explosives.

Measuring Engagement of Spectators of Social Digital Games

2021

We propose a methodology that enables measuring engagement of spectators in a social digital game combining physiological and self-reported data. As this digital game involves a group of freely moving people, the experience is filmed using a synchronizing technique that links physiological data with events in the game.
