Breakaway Points

Breakaway points are intentionally weakened or releasable sections in an engineered component that allow it to separate or fail in a controlled manner when subjected to an excessive load. Their mechanism relies on a predictable failure threshold, often created through reduced cross-sections, frangible fasteners, shear planes, or specialized couplings, so impact forces trigger detachment instead of transferring full loads to the surrounding structure. In engineering, breakaway points improve crashworthiness and limit damage in applications such as roadside signs, lighting poles, marine structures, and protective barriers. Proper design requires balancing reliable release, structural stability during normal service, and predictable post-impact behavior.

2014

An improved method to mechanically test bone anchorage to candidate implant surfaces is presented. This method allows for alignment of the disruption force exactly perpendicular, or parallel, to the plane of the implant surface, and provides an accurate means to direct the disruption forces to an exact peri-implant region.

2019

Freshwater mussel conservation is dependent on monitoring reproductive patterns and processes of species. This study standardizes a non-lethal protocol for sampling gill contents, characterizing larval development, and providing a digital repository for data collected. This protocol-database package will be an important tool for mussel researchers in recovery of imperiled species.

This method is useful for quantifying the early dynamics of cellular adhesion and spreading of anchorage-dependent cells onto the fibronectin. Furthermore, this assay can be used to investigate the effects of altered redox homeostasis on cell spreading and/or cell adhesion-related intracellular signaling pathways.
