Dual-modality Imaging

Dual-modality imaging combines two complementary imaging techniques to produce information that neither modality can provide alone. Each method captures different physical properties, such as anatomical structure, material composition, or functional activity, and computational registration aligns the resulting datasets into a shared spatial framework. In engineering, this approach supports biomedical visualization, tissue characterization, device development, and non-destructive evaluation by linking structure with function or internal features with material behavior. The integrated images can improve measurement, interpretation, and decision-making, while also guiding the design of systems that combine sensors, image-processing algorithms, and quantitative analysis.

Source: Schott, J. T., et al. Preparation of Rat Oligodendrocyte Progenitor Cultures and Quantification of Oligodendrogenesis Using Dual-infrared Fluorescence Scanning. J. Vis. Exp. (2016). This video demonstrates the use of dual fluorescence imaging to evaluate the differentiation of oligodendrocytes from precursor cells (OPCs) isolated from a rat pup brain. The process includes fixing the cells, labeling specific markers with primary and fluorophore-conjugated secondary antibodies, and...
