Durability Improvement

Durability improvement is the engineering practice of extending a material, component, or structure’s service life by increasing its resistance to damage and performance loss. Engineers assess failure modes such as fatigue, wear, corrosion, and environmental degradation, then modify material selection, geometry, manufacturing processes, protective coatings, or maintenance schedules to slow damage accumulation under operating conditions. These strategies can improve reliability, reduce replacement and lifecycle costs, and enhance safety in products ranging from mechanical parts and buildings to transportation systems and energy infrastructure. Durability testing and predictive models help verify performance and guide designs that remain functional under repeated loading and changing environments.

Brick Durability, Strength, and Appearance

2024

Brick durability, strength, and appearance are crucial factors in construction, influencing the choice of bricks for specific applications. The process of freeze-thaw, for instance, significantly affects brick durability. This phenomenon occurs when water absorbed by a brick expands as it freezes, potentially causing damage when it melts and refreezes. Bricks are graded for durability: SW-grade bricks are the most durable, offering high strength and low water absorption, followed by MW-grade...

2016

In this study, a protocol was developed to produce good quality pellets using a flat die pellet mill at reduced specific energy consumption testing high-moisture corn stover and a starch based binder. The results indicated that adding a corn starch binder improved the pellet durability, reduced percent fines and decreased specific energy consumption.

Dissociated hippocampal cell culture is a pivotal experimental tool in neuroscience. Neural cell survival and function in culture is enhanced when coralline skeletons are used as matrices, due to their neuroprotective and neuromodulative roles. Hence, neural cells grown on coralline matrix show higher durability, and thereby are more adequate for culturing.

A Rabbit Model of Durable Transgene Expression in Jugular Vein to Common Carotid Artery Interposition Grafts
