Furnace Annealing

Furnace annealing is a heat-treatment process in which a material, typically a metal, is heated and cooled under controlled furnace conditions to modify its microstructure and properties. The workpiece is raised to a selected temperature, held long enough for transformations and stress relief to occur, then cooled gradually inside the furnace to reduce thermal gradients and prevent excessive hardness. In engineering, furnace annealing can improve ductility, machinability, dimensional stability, and formability while reducing residual stresses produced by casting, welding, rolling, or machining. The process supports reliable manufacturing by producing more uniform and predictable material behavior.

We describe a flash infrared annealing method used for the synthesis of perovskite and mesoscopic-TiO2 films. Annealing parameters are varied and optimized for processing on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass and indium tin oxide-coated polyethylene terephthalate (ITO PET), subsequently giving devices power conversion efficiencies >20%.
