Particle Residence

Particle residence describes the time solid or suspended particles remain within a process system, a key measure for predicting transport, reaction, and separation performance in engineering. Residence depends on particle size and density, fluid velocity, equipment geometry, mixing, settling, and interactions with surfaces; these factors determine how particles move through zones such as reactors, fluidized beds, or conveying lines. Engineers use residence-time information to assess reaction completion, heat and mass transfer, particle classification, and material throughput. Measuring or modeling particle residence can reveal uneven flow, unwanted accumulation, and operating conditions that affect efficiency, product quality, and process safety.

Subatomic Particles

Dalton was only partially correct about the particles that make up matter. All matter is composed of atoms, and atoms are composed of three smaller subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. These three particles account for the mass and the charge of an atom. The Discovery of the Electron The first clue about the subatomic structure came at the end of the 19th century when J.J. Thomson discovered the electron using a cathode ray tube. This apparatus consisted of a sealed glass...

This video shows the resident-intruder paradigm in rats. This test is a standardized method to measure offensive aggression, defensive behavior and violence in a semi-natural setting. The use of the paradigm for social stress experiments is explained as well.

In Vitro Resident Memory CD8 T Cell Differentiation Using Epithelial Organoid-T Cell Co-culture System

To study CD8 T cell differentiation and function in vitro, CD8 T cells can be isolated from the mouse to be co-cultured long-term with preformed infected murine vaginal epithelial organoids. Here, we describe this process and assess the acquisition of resident memory T cell markers upon co-culture.

Noncompartmental Analysis: Mean Residence Time

According to statistical moment theory, mean residence time (MRT) is an important measure in pharmacokinetics. MRT can be defined as the expected mean of a probability density function distribution. It provides valuable insights into drug disposition in the body. After the administration of a drug through intravenous bolus injection, the drug molecules are distributed throughout the body and remain there for varying periods. The MRT represents the average time these drug molecules stay in the...
