Platinum Iron Nanowires

Platinum iron nanowires are one-dimensional nanoscale structures composed of platinum and iron, engineered to combine high surface area with tunable electrical, catalytic, and magnetic properties. Their behavior depends on nanowire diameter, composition, atomic arrangement, and the interaction between platinum and iron, which can modify surface reactivity and electronic structure. These features make platinum iron nanowires useful in electrocatalysis, chemical sensing, magnetic devices, and nanoelectronics. In engineering research, controlling their synthesis and composition helps optimize performance while reducing platinum usage, supporting the development of more efficient and functional nanoscale materials.

Synthesis of Platinum-nickel Nanowires and Optimization for Oxygen Reduction Performance

2018

The protocol describes the synthesis and electrochemical testing of platinum-nickel nanowires. Nanowires were synthesized by the galvanic displacement of a nickel nanowire template. Post-synthesis processing, including hydrogen annealing, acid leaching, and oxygen annealing were used to optimize nanowire performance and durability in the oxygen reduction reaction.

Procedures are outlined to prepare segmented and coaxial nanowires via templated electrodeposition in nanopores. As examples, segmented nanowires consisting of Ag and ZnO segments, and coaxial nanowires consisting of a TiO2 shell and a Ag core were made. The nanowires were used in photocatalytic hydrogen formation experiments.
