Sample Extraction

Sample extraction is the process of isolating a representative material or target component from a larger, often complex sample for measurement, testing, or analysis. In engineering workflows, extraction may involve defined sampling locations and volumes, followed by physical separation, filtration, drying, or solvent-based transfer, while controlled handling limits contamination, loss, and chemical or structural changes. The resulting extract or specimen supports characterization of material composition, physical properties, and process performance. Reliable extraction improves data quality, enables comparison between samples, and informs decisions in environmental monitoring, manufacturing, quality control, and research.

miRNA Extraction: A Method to Extract miRNA from Plasma Sample

2023

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are tissue specific, small, non-coding RNAs regulating gene expression, and could represent ideal candidates for early detection of lung cancer. In the featured protocol, we will isolate microRNA from patient blood samples for early lung cancer screening.

We describe a protocol for filtration of water samples with a filter cartridge and extraction of environmental DNA (eDNA) without having to cut open the housing to remove the filter. This protocol is developed for metabarcoding eDNA from fishes, but is also applicable to eDNA from other organisms.

Solid Phase Microextraction Sampling: A Probe-based Technique for Sample Extraction from Graft Tissues

In this video, we demonstrate SPME-probe-based extraction of metabolites from a pre-harvested donor kidney. The extracted metabolites can be used to perform metabolomic and lipidomic analysis in order to assess the organ quality for transplantation.

Circulating miRNA Extraction: A Method to Isolate miRNA from Plasma Samples Via Organic Extraction and Small RNA Enrichment

2023

This video describes the extraction of circulating microRNA from plasma samples of colorectal cancer patients using organic extraction followed by glass-fiber column enrichment. miRNAs are stable in biological fluids such as serum and plasma, which renders them ideal circulating biomarkers for cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment decision-making and monitoring. This method will help identify new circulating biomarkers capable of predicting clinical outcomes in patients.
