Andersen Six-stage Sampler

The Andersen Six-stage Sampler is a cascade impactor that collects airborne particles according to their aerodynamic size, making it useful for measuring environmental aerosols and bioaerosols. A controlled air stream passes through six progressively finer stages, where particles with sufficient inertia impact onto culture media or collection surfaces while smaller particles continue to later stages. The resulting size distribution can indicate how deeply particles may travel through airways and helps characterize airborne microorganisms, dust, and other particulate contaminants. Environmental researchers use this sampler to assess air quality, investigate contamination sources, and evaluate the effectiveness of filtration, ventilation, and exposure-control measures.

Ammonia emissions are a major threat to the environment by eutrophication, soil acidification and fine particle formation and stem mainly from agricultural sources. This method allows ammonia loss measurements in replicated field trials enabling statistical analysis of emissions and of relationships between crop development and emissions.

To use Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) in omics research, a method is needed to generate large populations of worms where a single sample can be measured across platforms for comparative analyses. Here, a method to culture C. elegans populations on large-scale culture plates (LSCPs) and to document population growth is presented.
