Canopy Gap Fraction

Canopy gap fraction is the proportion of open sky or unobstructed space visible through vegetation, providing a measure of how densely a plant canopy covers an area. It is estimated from hemispherical photographs, optical sensors, or lidar by distinguishing canopy elements from gaps and calculating the fraction of sightlines or sampled area without foliage. This metric indicates how much light can reach the forest floor and helps characterize canopy structure, leaf area, and habitat conditions. In environmental research, canopy gap fraction supports studies of ecosystem productivity, plant regeneration, evapotranspiration, biodiversity, and forest disturbance, while remote-sensing measurements enable monitoring across large landscapes.

Gap Junctions

2026

Multicellular organisms employ a variety of ways for cells to communicate with each other. Gap junctions are specialized proteins that form pores between neighboring cells in animals, connecting the cytoplasm between the two, and allowing for the exchange of molecules and ions. They are found in a wide range of invertebrate and vertebrate species, mediate numerous functions including cell differentiation and development, and are associated with numerous human diseases, including cardiac and...

Gap Junctions

The cytoplasm of adjacent animal cells can exchange small molecules, ions, and secondary messengers via the communication channels which form the gap junctions. These junctions comprise a few hundred to thousands of molecular channels, each made of two halves, called the connexon hemichannel. A connexon is a hexamer of six transmembrane connexin proteins, which assemble radially, thus forming a pore or channel in the center. One connexon hemichannel docks with a corresponding connexon on the...

Fractional Distillation

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Nicholas Leadbeater — University of Connecticut Distillation is perhaps the most common laboratory technique employed by chemists for the purification of organic liquids. Compounds in a mixture with different boiling points separate into individual components when the mixture is carefully distilled. The two main types of distillation are "simple distillation" and "fractional distillation", and both are widely used in organic chemistry laboratories. Simple distillation...

Service Gap Model

2024

Understanding service quality gaps enables companies to make targeted improvements to meet customer needs better. The Knowledge Gap arises when a company needs to understand customer expectations due to inadequate research or communication. For example, a store might assume customers prefer a wide selection of products when they value faster service. Companies should actively gather and respond to customer feedback to close this gap. The Policy Gap occurs when a company's service policies do...

2009

The accompanying video describes the use of the GELFREE 8100 Fractionation System, which partitions complex protein samples on the basis of molecular weight and recovers the fractions in liquid phase. The video describes how the technology works, how it is used, and provides resultant data, with polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis of fractionated bovine liver homogenate.
