Fish Feeding Bioassay

A fish feeding bioassay is an experimental method that uses feeding behavior or food consumption to assess how an environmental sample, chemical, or other stressor affects aquatic organisms. In a controlled setup, fish receive standardized food while researchers vary exposure conditions and measure endpoints such as feeding rate, intake, latency to feed, or growth. Changes in these responses can indicate sublethal toxicity, altered physiological function, or reduced ecological fitness before mortality occurs. Fish feeding bioassays support environmental monitoring, contaminant screening, wastewater assessment, and ecological risk evaluation by linking laboratory observations to potential effects on aquatic populations.

2026

This study presents a gelatin-based feeding method that enables precise, non-invasive, body mass–based oral drug delivery in adult zebrafish. The protocol demonstrates reliable feed acceptance and, as a proof-of-principle, successful delivery of MK-801, which resulted in the expected behavioral effects.

A series of basic methods to enable the study of the reproductive ecology of fish kept in aquaria are described. These are useful protocols for collecting fish using SCUBA, transporting live fish, and observing the reproductive behavior of wild-caught fish kept in aquaria.

Feeding Test: Assessment of Feeding Preferences in Drosophila melanogaster
