Pathogenic Vibrio

Pathogenic Vibrio are disease-causing bacteria found primarily in marine, estuarine, and other aquatic environments, where they can threaten human, animal, and ecosystem health. Their abundance and distribution are influenced by conditions such as temperature, salinity, nutrient availability, and organic matter, while virulence factors including toxins, adhesins, and secretion systems enable colonization and tissue damage after ingestion or wound exposure. Environmental monitoring uses water and seafood sampling, culture-based detection, and molecular assays to track these organisms and assess infection risks. Such surveillance supports public health decisions, seafood safety, aquaculture management, and evaluation of how changing environmental conditions may alter Vibrio transmission.

2016

Detection and isolation of clinically relevant Vibrio species require selective and differential culture media. This study evaluated the ability of a new chromogenic medium to detect and identify V. parahaemolyticus and other related species. The new medium was found to have better sensitivity and specificity than the conventional medium.

(2016)This video demonstrates a culture-based method for identifying Vibrio species, highlighting chromogenic agar as a more accurate alternative to the commonly used thiosulfate-citrate-bile salts-sucrose or TCBS agar. Chromogenic agar provides superior differentiation of Vibrio strains by detecting species-specific...

(2017).This video demonstrates the Voges-Proskauer (VP) test to differentiate among three biotypes of Vibrio cholerae: classical, wild-type El Tor, and El Tor variant. Each culture is inoculated into a glucose-containing medium, incubated, and treated with α-naphthol and potassium hydroxide to detect the presence of acetoin. A...
