Soil-pupating Insects

Soil-pupating insects are insects whose immature stages develop into adults within protective chambers or spaces in the soil, linking their life cycles to terrestrial ecosystems. During pupation, larvae undergo metamorphosis while soil texture, moisture, temperature, and depth shape the stability of this belowground environment and influence survival. This strategy connects aboveground feeding or activity with soil conditions, affecting food webs, decomposition, nutrient cycling, and population dynamics. Understanding soil-pupating insects helps researchers evaluate habitat quality, monitor environmental change, and improve approaches to studying and managing insect communities.

Repeated soil sampling has recently been shown to be an effective way to monitor forest soil change over years and decades. To support its use, a protocol is presented that synthesizes the latest information on soil resampling methods to aid in the design and implementation of successful soil monitoring programs.

Osmoregulation in Insects

2019

Malpighian tubules are specialized structures found in the digestive systems of many arthropods, including most insects, that handle excretion and osmoregulation. The tubules are typically arranged in pairs and have a convoluted structure that increases their surface area. Malpighian tubules extend from the digestive tract, typically the area between the midgut and hindgut, into the hemolymph—a mixture of blood and interstitial fluid found in insects and other arthropods, as well as most...
