Upflow Anaerobic Solid State Reactor

An upflow anaerobic solid-state reactor is a treatment system that biologically stabilizes high-solids organic waste while recovering energy as biogas, making it relevant to sustainable waste management. In the reactor, waste remains largely stationary as liquid or recycled leachate moves upward through the solids, enabling anaerobic microbial communities to hydrolyze complex materials and convert the resulting compounds into methane and carbon dioxide without oxygen. This configuration can support the treatment of agricultural residues, food waste, and other biodegradable materials while reducing organic pollution and sludge-handling demands. Its performance depends on moisture distribution, loading conditions, retention time, and balanced microbial activity.

Microbial sulfate reduction is a process of great importance in environmental biotechnology. The success of the sulfidogenic reactors depends among other factors on the microbial composition of the sludge. Here, we present a protocol to develop sulfidogenic sludge from hydrothermal vents sediments in a UASB reactor for reductive dechlorination purposes.

A novel Upflow Anaerobic Solid State (UASS) reactor was used for biogas production from fibrous feedstock. Digestate from UASS reactor was hydrothermally carbonized into HTC biochar in a pressurized batch reactor. The integration of the two bioenergy concepts was applied in this study to increase overall bioenergy production.

Begin with an anaerobic digester, a sealed, oxygen-free reactor seeded with a synthetic sludge that mimics the settled solids from wastewater. The sludge contains mesophilic anaerobic microbes, a mixed microbial community. These microbes thrive at moderate temperatures and drive the digestion of the sludge’s organic matter.Continuously mix the sludge to sustain the bacterial activity and promote digestion.Later, add bioplastics, which are biodegradable polymers, into the sludge.During incubation,...

Liquid Phase Reactor: Sucrose Inversion

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Both batch and continuous flow reactors are used in catalytic reactions. Packed beds, which use solid catalysts and a continuous flow, are the most common configuration. In the absence of an extensive recycle stream, such packed bed reactors are typically modeled as "plug flow". The other most common continuous reactor is a stirred tank, which is assumed to be perfectly...
