Time Value

Time value is the finance principle that the value of money depends on when it is received, because funds available today can earn returns and may lose purchasing power over time. Finance applies this principle through compounding, which projects present funds into the future, and discounting, which converts future cash flows into their present value using a required rate of return. Time value analysis supports investment appraisal, loan pricing, bond valuation, retirement planning, and comparisons among cash flows received at different dates. It provides a foundation for assessing opportunity cost, risk, and the economic value of financial decisions.
