Fat Thickness Measurement

Fat thickness measurement is the assessment of adipose tissue depth, most often subcutaneous fat, and helps characterize body composition beyond body weight alone. Depending on the method, clinicians measure a skinfold with calibrated calipers or use imaging-based tools such as ultrasound; the resulting thickness reflects the tissue layer at a defined anatomical site and may be combined across sites to estimate overall adiposity. In medicine, these measurements support nutritional assessment, obesity evaluation, growth monitoring, and follow-up during lifestyle or treatment programs. Standardized site selection, positioning, and repeated measurements improve reliability and make changes more interpretable over time.
