Minimal Trauma Surgery

Minimal trauma surgery is a surgical approach that aims to treat injury or disease while causing the least possible additional damage to tissues and organs. It achieves this by limiting dissection, blood loss, operative manipulation, and incision size, often through careful tissue handling, minimally invasive access, and targeted repair when clinically appropriate. In medicine, the approach can reduce postoperative pain, inflammation, infection risk, and recovery time while preserving normal anatomy and function. Its principles guide procedures ranging from laparoscopic and endoscopic operations to refined open techniques, supporting safer care and improved outcomes when balanced against the urgency and complexity of the patient’s condition.

Minimally invasive surgical (MIS) procedures rely on anatomical references to localize structures not directly visible to the surgeon. This manuscript describes a combined method of plane-by-plane dissection and sectional anatomy of fresh-frozen specimens to locate the structures at risk during MIS procedures.

Pseudofracture, a reproducible murine model of sterile musculoskeletal trauma, allows for evaluation of late term post-traumatic immune responses. This article describes the procedural execution of the model step by step, including the potential for experimental model combinations to permit study of multiple trauma.

Minimally Invasive Treatment for Thoracolumbar Burst Fracture Using Sagittal Alignment Screws and A Trauma Reduction Device

2024

The sagittal adjusting screw (SAS) system has been widely used for thoracolumbar (TL) spinal trauma. Percutaneous options and specialized trauma reduction devices are also available for the SAS system. We describe a technique for reducing TL burst fractures using an SAS system and a newly introduced trauma reduction device.

Acute brain trauma is a severe injury that has no adequate treatment to date. Multiphoton microscopy allows studying longitudinally the process of acute brain trauma development and probing therapeutical strategies in rodents. Two models of acute brain trauma studied with in vivo two-photon imaging of brain are demonstrated in this protocol.
