Near Infrared Angiography

Near infrared angiography is an optical imaging technique that uses near-infrared light to visualize blood flow and vascular anatomy in living tissue, helping clinicians assess perfusion during diagnosis and surgery. After administration of a near-infrared fluorescent tracer, commonly indocyanine green, illumination excites the dye, and a camera detects emitted fluorescence as vessels and regional blood flow. This real-time information can guide reconstructive and vascular procedures, evaluate graft or flap viability, and identify areas of inadequate perfusion. By linking anatomy with functional circulation, near infrared angiography supports more informed treatment decisions and provides a platform for studying microvascular function and tissue healing.

Position the patient's head inside the radiofrequency, or RF, coil of a magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, machine.Initiate the time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography or TOF MRA, a non-invasive technique for visualizing blood vessels.Select a tissue slice for imaging to visualize arteries and veins.Apply an RF pulse to excite the protons within the selected imaging slice. These protons release energy, which is detected as an MR signal.Repeated application of RF pulses saturates the MR...

Detection of Internal Carotid Artery Narrowing Using Digital Subtraction Angiography

Position a human patient with internal carotid stenosis, a condition characterized by narrowing of the internal carotid artery, on the imaging table for digital subtraction angiography (DSA). Insert an angiocatheter into the common carotid artery at the fourth cervical vertebra level. Capture a pre-contrast X-ray image to record background structures like bones and soft tissues using X-ray irradiation. Administer an iodine-based contrast medium into the carotid artery. The contrast medium...

Source: Vy M. Dong and Zhiwei Chen, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment will demonstrate the use of infrared (IR) spectroscopy (also known as vibrational spectroscopy) to elucidate the identity of an unknown compound by identifying the functional group(s) present. IR spectra will be obtained on an IR spectrometer using the attenuated total reflection (ATR) sampling technique with a neat sample of the unknown.

We detail a new near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) catheter for 2-dimensional intravascular molecular imaging of plaque biology in vivo. The NIRF catheter can visualize key biological processes such as inflammation by reporting on the presence of plaque-avid activatable and targeted NIR fluorochromes. The catheter utilizes clinical engineering and power requirements and is targeted for application in human coronary arteries. The following research study describes a multimodal imaging strategy...
