Outer-film Application

Outer-film application is the process of placing a thin, continuous film on the exterior surface of a medical material, device, or formulation to modify its performance and protect underlying components. The film forms when a coating solution, suspension, or polymer layer is spread or deposited onto the surface and then dried, cured, or otherwise solidified under controlled conditions. In medicine, outer films can provide barrier protection, improve handling and stability, regulate contact with surrounding tissues or fluids, or support controlled release from coated products. Careful control of film thickness, adhesion, uniformity, and drying conditions helps ensure consistent function and patient safety.

Source: Logan G. Kiefer, Andrew R. Falkowski, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electroplating is a process that uses electric current to reduce dissolved metal cations so that they form a thin coating on an electrode. Other thin film deposition techniques include chemical vapor deposition (CVD), spin coating, dip coating, and sputter deposition among others. CVD uses a gas-phase precursor of the element to be...

Sutures are usually needed to repair tissue during surgical procedures. However, their application can be problematic as they are invasive and may damage tissue. The fabrication and application methods of a novel tissue adhesive are here reported. This adhesive film is laser-activated and does not require the use of sutures.

We offered a method to directly synthesize high c-axis (0002) ZnO thin film by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The as-synthesized ZnO thin film combined with Pt interdigitated electrode was used as sensing layer for ultraviolet photodetector, showing a high performance through a combination of its good responsivity and reliability.

We demonstrate a storable, transportable lipid bilayer formation system. A lipid bilayer membrane can be formed within 1 hr with over 80% success rate when a frozen membrane precursor is brought to ambient temperature. This system will reduce laborious processes and expertise associated with ion channels.
