Sonographic Assessment

Sonographic assessment is the use of ultrasound imaging to evaluate anatomical structures, movement, and blood flow without ionizing radiation. A transducer emits high-frequency sound waves into the body and converts returning echoes into images, with differences in tissue acoustic properties determining image brightness and contrast; Doppler techniques assess motion, particularly blood flow. In medicine, sonography supports the assessment of organs, vessels, soft tissues, and developing fetuses, often providing real-time guidance for diagnosis and procedures. Its portability, safety, and ability to enable repeated examinations make it valuable in clinical care, emergency settings, and longitudinal monitoring.

Early stage hemodynamic dysfunction is critical to the development of kidney disease. Yet, detection methodologies are limited. Recent advances in sonography provide a noninvasive, accurate option for early detection of kidney injury. This study outlines a step-by-step, sonographic methodology for detecting kidney dysfunction using a drug-induced nephrotoxicity rat model.

Here, we present a protocol that can be applied in the neonatal intensive care unit and the delivery room in relation to three scenarios: cardiac arrest, hemodynamic deterioration, or respiratory decompensation. This protocol can be performed with a state-of-the-art ultrasound machine or an affordable handheld device; an image acquisition protocol is carefully detailed.

Here, we present a comprehensive behavioral test battery, including the novel tank, Shoaling, and social preference tests, to effectively determine the potential neurotoxic effects of chemicals (e.g., methamphetamine and glyphosate) on adult zebrafish using a single tank. This method is relevant to neurotoxicity and environmental research.

Systematic Assessment of Well-Being in Mice for Procedures Using General Anesthesia

We developed a protocol to assess well-being in mice during procedures using general anesthesia. A series of behavioral parameters indicating levels of well-being as well as glucocorticoid metabolites were analyzed. The protocol can serve as a general aid to estimate the degree of severity in a scientific, animal-centered manner.
