Trauma Patient Samples

Trauma patient samples are biological specimens collected from people with acute physical injuries for clinical evaluation and research, helping characterize injury severity and physiological response. Common specimens include blood, plasma, serum, urine, tissue, and wound fluids; standardized collection, processing, and storage preserve cells, proteins, metabolites, nucleic acids, and other measurable components for analysis. In medicine, these samples support diagnosis, monitoring of bleeding and inflammation, biomarker discovery, and assessment of treatment response and recovery. Carefully documented sampling also enables researchers to compare injury patterns and develop evidence-based tools for triage, prognosis, personalized care, and improved trauma outcomes.

Acute brain trauma is a severe injury that has no adequate treatment to date. Multiphoton microscopy allows studying longitudinally the process of acute brain trauma development and probing therapeutical strategies in rodents. Two models of acute brain trauma studied with in vivo two-photon imaging of brain are demonstrated in this protocol.

Circulating tumor cells are isolated from the blood of cancer patients without inflicting cellular damage. Isolation of tumor cells is accomplished using a bimolecular surface of E-selectin in addition to antibodies against epithelial markers. A nanotube coating specifically promotes cancer cell adhesion resulting in high capture purities.
