Ventilator Intubation

Ventilator intubation is a medical procedure that places an endotracheal tube into the trachea to maintain an open airway and support breathing with mechanical ventilation. Clinicians guide the tube through the mouth or nose, past the vocal cords, and into the trachea, where an inflatable cuff helps seal the airway while a ventilator delivers oxygen-rich gas under controlled positive pressure and removes carbon dioxide. The procedure is used during respiratory failure, surgery, and situations requiring airway protection or prolonged ventilatory support. Accurate placement and continuous monitoring are essential because complications can include airway trauma, aspiration, and ventilator-associated infection.

Preoxygenation Techniques for Tracheal Intubation in Critically Ill Adults Utilizing Oxygen Mask and Noninvasive Ventilation

2025

We present evidence-based preoxygenation strategies that demonstrate the use of oxygen masks and noninvasive positive pressure ventilation to optimize oxygenation in critically ill patients undergoing emergent tracheal intubation, thereby reducing the risk of hypoxemia, extending safe apnea time, and minimizing complications.

Tracheal Intubation for Mechanical Ventilation: A Procedure to Insert Endotracheal Tube in Trachea of Rabbit Model

This paper describes a striaghforward and efficient method of intubating mice for pulmonary function measurements or pulmonary instillation, that allows the mice to recover and be studied at later times. The procedure involves an inexpensive fiberoptic light source that directly illuminates the trachea.
