Virtual Reality Simulator

A virtual reality simulator is a computer-based system that immerses users in interactive, three-dimensional environments, allowing them to practice tasks without direct exposure to real-world risks. A head-mounted display presents synchronized visual scenes while motion tracking detects head, hand, or instrument movements, enabling the simulated environment to respond in real time and, in some systems, provide haptic feedback. In medicine, virtual reality simulators support anatomy instruction, procedural training, surgical planning, rehabilitation, and patient education. They provide repeatable scenarios and objective performance assessment, helping learners develop psychomotor and decision-making skills while giving researchers a controlled platform for studying clinical workflows and human performance.

Using Virtual Reality to Transfer Motor Skill Knowledge from One Hand to Another

2017

We describe a novel virtual-reality based setup which exploits voluntary control of one hand to improve motor-skill performance in the other (non-trained) hand. This is achieved by providing real-time movement-based sensory feedback as if the non-trained hand is moving. This new approach may be used to enhance rehabilitation of patients with unilateral hemiparesis.
