Walking Velocity

Walking velocity is the rate at which a person moves on foot, typically calculated as distance traveled divided by time, and it provides a practical measure of mobility and functional status. In clinical assessment, walking velocity is measured over a defined distance while neuromuscular control, muscle strength, balance, coordination, and cardiopulmonary capacity contribute to performance. Medicine uses walking velocity to evaluate gait impairment, monitor rehabilitation, identify changes associated with frailty or neurological disease, and support assessments of treatment response. Because it is simple, inexpensive, and repeatable, walking velocity can complement other functional and mobility measures in patient care and research.

The aim was to substantiate optimal use of data collection techniques for Nordic walking gait and posture analysis. Three-dimensional motion capture should be used during short duration analysis (i.e. single gait cycle), while accelerometry should be employed for longer duration analysis (i.e. repeated cycles) like a 6 Minute Walk Test.
