Acoustic Angiography

Acoustic angiography is a contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging technique that maps blood vessels, including fine microvascular networks, with high spatial detail. It uses gas-filled microbubbles and a dual-frequency transducer: low-frequency ultrasound excites the bubbles, while higher-frequency components detect their nonlinear, superharmonic emissions and suppress signals from surrounding tissue. In neuroscience, this approach can visualize cerebral perfusion and vascular architecture in living tissue, supporting studies of brain tumors, neurovascular coupling, blood-brain barrier disruption, and cerebrovascular disease. Its real-time, nonionizing operation offers a complementary method for investigating how vascular structure and function change during development, injury, or disease.

In this video we first describe fabrication and operation procedures of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) acoustic counterflow device. We then demonstrate an experimental setup that allows for both qualitative flow visualization and quantitative analysis of complex flows within the SAW pumping device.

Position the patient's head inside the radiofrequency, or RF, coil of a magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, machine.Initiate the time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography or TOF MRA, a non-invasive technique for visualizing blood vessels.Select a tissue slice for imaging to visualize arteries and veins.Apply an RF pulse to excite the protons within the selected imaging slice. These protons release energy, which is detected as an MR signal.Repeated application of RF pulses saturates the MR...

Detection of Internal Carotid Artery Narrowing Using Digital Subtraction Angiography

Position a human patient with internal carotid stenosis, a condition characterized by narrowing of the internal carotid artery, on the imaging table for digital subtraction angiography (DSA). Insert an angiocatheter into the common carotid artery at the fourth cervical vertebra level. Capture a pre-contrast X-ray image to record background structures like bones and soft tissues using X-ray irradiation. Administer an iodine-based contrast medium into the carotid artery. The contrast medium...

Activating Molecules, Ions, and Solid Particles with Acoustic Cavitation

Acoustic cavitation in liquids submitted to power ultrasound creates transient extreme conditions inside the collapsing bubbles, which are the origin of unusual chemical reactivity and light emission, known as sonoluminescence. In the presence of noble gases, nonequilibrium plasma is formed. The "hot" particles and the photons generated by collapsing bubbles are able to excite species in solution.

Habituation and prepulse inhibition of startle are operational measures of sensory gating. Sensory gating is disrupted in schizophrenia, and some other mental disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. We here describe a standard protocol to assess short-term and long-term habituation as well as prepulse inhibition of acoustic startle responses in rats and mice.
