Acrylic Plate Matrix

An acrylic plate matrix is a precision tissue-slicing device that uses a rigid acrylic block with evenly spaced blade guides to produce reproducible sections of biological specimens. In neuroscience, the brain is positioned and stabilized within the matrix, while blades pass through the guide slots at defined intervals to generate coronal, sagittal, or other consistently oriented slices. These sections support histological staining, immunohistochemistry, electrophysiology, and anatomical mapping by preserving tissue organization and enabling comparable sampling across specimens. Standardized sectioning improves experimental consistency and helps researchers relate cellular features to brain regions, circuits, and disease-related changes.

2026

An innovative method to build expandable brain matrices to cut either coronal or sagittal slices is described for application to neonatal piglets. This budget-friendly approach utilizes acrylic plates carved using templates from agarose gel brain molding, applies to multiple species, and allows for expansion to accommodate brain growth.

A novel methodology is presented to synthesize and program main-chain liquid-crystalline elastomers using commercially available starting monomers. A wide range of thermomechanical properties was tailored by adjusting the amount of crosslinker, while the actuation performance was dependent on the amount of applied strain during programming.
