Digital Video Analysis

Digital video analysis is the computational examination of recorded video to measure movement, behavior, and changes across space and time. In neuroscience, software processes sequential frames to identify subjects or body parts, track their positions, and convert pixel changes into quantitative measures such as speed, duration, trajectory, or interaction frequency. Researchers use these measurements to study locomotion, motor coordination, animal behavior, and responses to sensory, pharmacological, or neural interventions, often replacing subjective scoring with reproducible datasets. By linking behavioral patterns to neural activity or experimental conditions, digital video analysis supports objective phenotyping and strengthens the interpretation of studies in systems, behavioral, and translational neuroscience.

Measuring the impacts of environmental contaminants on fish behavior is often subjective and challenging particularly when dealing with sublethal endpoints. We describe methods including video technology to quantify swimming behavior of early life stage white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) during and after 96 hr acute exposures to various concentrations of copper.
