Hair Cell Bending

Hair cell bending is the deflection of sensory hair cells’ stereocilia, a mechanical process that converts physical movement into electrical signals in the auditory and vestibular systems. When sound or head motion shifts the hair bundle, tension in tip links opens mechanically gated ion channels, allowing ions to enter and change the cell’s membrane potential; movement in the opposite direction reduces channel opening. This mechanotransduction enables cochlear hair cells to encode sound and vestibular hair cells to detect balance, acceleration, and head position. Studying hair cell bending helps explain hearing and balance disorders and supports research into sensory-cell damage, protection, and repair.

Hair cells are the sensory receptors of the auditory system—they transduce mechanical sound waves into electrical energy that the nervous system can understand. Hair cells are located in the organ of Corti within the cochlea of the inner ear, between the basilar and tectorial membranes. The actual sensory receptors are called inner hair cells. The outer hair cells serve other functions, such as sound amplification in the cochlea, and are not discussed in detail here. Hair cells are named after...

A reliable method to investigate outer hair cell (OHC) motile responses, including electromotility, slow motility and bending, is described. OHC motility is elicited by stimulation with an external alternating electrical field, and the method takes advantage of high-speed image recording, LED-based illumination, and last generation image analysis software.

Pure bending is a fundamental concept in structural mechanics, essential for understanding how materials deform under symmetrical loads without direct forces. Pure bending occurs when prismatic members, such as beams, are subjected to equal and opposite moments that induce bending. The phenomenon is crucial as it allows for predicting stress distributions without the influence of axial or shear forces. In pure bending, the bending stress in a beam is calculated based on the bending moment and...
