Hemodynamic Lag

Hemodynamic lag is the delay between changes in neural activity and the accompanying vascular response that alters cerebral blood flow, blood volume, and oxygenation. In neurovascular coupling, active neurons influence nearby astrocytes and blood vessels, but the resulting increase in perfusion and oxygen delivery unfolds over seconds rather than instantaneously; this delayed response produces the blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal measured by functional magnetic resonance imaging. Accounting for hemodynamic lag helps neuroscientists interpret the timing and location of brain activity, improve models of functional connectivity, and distinguish neural differences from vascular differences in studies of cognition, disease, and brain injury.

2014

ScanLag is a high-throughput method for measuring the delay in growth, namely lag time, as well as the growth rate of colonies for thousands of cells in parallel. Screening using ScanLag enables the discrimination between long lag-time and slow growth at the level of a single variant.

Lagging Strand Synthesis

2023

During replication, the complementary strands in double-stranded DNA are synthesized at different rates. Replication first begins on the leading strand. Replication starts later, occurs more slowly, and proceeds discontinuously on the lagging strand. There are several major differences between synthesis of the leading strand and synthesis of the lagging strand. 1) Leading strand synthesis happens in the direction of replication fork opening, whereas lagging strand synthesis happens in the...

Phase-lead and Phase-lag Controllers

Understanding the working function of different types of controllers can be illustrated with practical analogies, such as adjusting a stereo's volume equalizer. Cranking up the bass involves a phase-lead controller, which functions as a high-pass filter, while increasing the treble uses a phase-lag controller, which acts as a low-pass filter. PD controllers, similar to high-pass filters, enhance the system's response to high-frequency components. PI controllers, akin to low-pass filters, manage...
