Optokinetic Response

The optokinetic response is a reflexive pattern of eye movements that stabilizes vision when the surrounding visual scene moves, making it an important measure of visual and oculomotor function. As motion across the retina drives brainstem and ocular motor circuits, the eyes follow the scene during a slow phase and then rapidly reset with a saccade, producing a repeating nystagmus. In neuroscience, researchers use this response to study motion processing, gaze stabilization, sensorimotor integration, and visual development. Its measurable changes can also help characterize neurological disorders, visual system dysfunction, and the effects of altered sensory conditions.

Optokinetic response has been widely used to assess the visual functions of larval zebrafish. Nevertheless, the standard protocol for larval fish is not yet readily applicable in adults1-5. Here, we introduce how to measure the OKR of adult zebrafish using a new protocol which is established in our lab.
