Protein Concentration Measurement

Protein concentration measurement is the quantitative determination of protein abundance in a biological sample, an essential step for comparing molecular composition and experimental responses. In common colorimetric assays, proteins bind assay reagents to produce a color change measured by absorbance, which is interpreted against standards of known concentration. In neuroscience, researchers use these measurements to quantify proteins in brain tissue, cerebrospinal fluid, cell lysates, or purified fractions, and to normalize downstream analyses such as immunoblotting or enzyme assays. Accurate concentration estimates improve comparisons across samples and help relate protein abundance to neuronal signaling, disease mechanisms, and treatment responses.

Understanding Concentration and Measuring Volumes

2023

Solutions are utilized to some degree in almost all biological research applications. Therefore understanding how to measure and manipulate them is imperative to any experiment. In this video, concepts in preparing solutions are introduced. Solutions consist of a solute dissolved in solvent to yield a homogeneous mixture of molecular substances. Solutions are generally identified by their components and corresponding concentrations. Concentrated solutions are diluted through various...

Drug Concentrations: Measurements

2024

Drug concentration is the quantity of a drug present in a biological sample. Measuring drug amounts in biological samples allows the clinician to understand how a drug is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted. Samples can be obtained through invasive or non-invasive methods. Invasive techniques involve surgical or parenteral interventions to gather blood, cerebrospinal fluid, or tissue biopsy. Conversely, non-invasive approaches provide samples like urine, feces, and saliva. Plasma —...

This video demonstrates the isolation and concentration of bacterial culture filtrate proteins, which include bacterial extracellular vesicles, using ultrafiltration. The concentrated extracellular vesicles serve as diagnostic markers for disease detection.

Calcification Assay to Measure Calcium Concentration in Aortic Valve Interstitial Cells

2025

This video demonstrates an assay technique for assessing the calcification of the aortic valve interstitial cells in vitro. The assay helps to quantify the calcium concentration using the arsenazo III reagent, a calcium-sensitive dye that reacts with calcium ions to form a purple-colored calcium-arsenazo complex.
