Shape Difference Vectors

Shape difference vectors are geometric representations of how one anatomical form differs from another in position, size, or local structure. In neuroscience, they are typically calculated by establishing correspondence between points, landmarks, or surface vertices on a reference brain and a comparison brain, then encoding each displacement as a vector with direction and magnitude. These vectors can reveal localized patterns of cortical expansion, contraction, or deformation that summary measures may miss. Applied to neuroimaging and computational morphometry, shape difference vectors support comparisons across individuals, developmental stages, and clinical groups, helping researchers relate brain anatomy to aging, neurological disorders, or treatment-related changes.

Molecular Shape and Polarity

Dipole Moment of a Molecule Polar covalent bonds connect two atoms with differing electronegativities, leaving one atom with a partial positive charge (δ+) and the other atom with a partial negative charge (δ–), as the electrons are pulled toward the more electronegative atom. This separation of charge gives rise to a bond dipole moment. The magnitude of a bond dipole moment is represented by the Greek letter mu (µ) and is given by the formula shown here, where Q is the magnitude of the...

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Psychophysics is a branch of psychology and neuroscience that tries to explain how physical quantities are translated into neural firing and mental representations of magnitude. One set of questions in this area pertains to just-noticeable differences (JND): How much does something need to change in order for the change to be perceivable? To pump intuitions about this, consider the fact that small children grow at an enormous...

Source: Nicholas Timmons, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment demonstrates how vectors add and subtract in multiple directions. The goal will be to analytically calculate the addition or subtraction of multiple vectors and then to experimentally confirm the calculations. A vector is an object with both magnitude and direction. The magnitude of a vector is simply denoted as the length,...

VSEPR Theory and the Basic Shapes

Overview of VSEPR Theory Valence shell electron-pair repulsion theory (VSEPR theory) enables us to predict the molecular structure, including approximate bond angles around a central atom, of a molecule from an examination of the number of bonds and lone electron pairs in its Lewis structure. The VSEPR model assumes that electron pairs in the valence shell of a central atom will adopt an arrangement that minimizes repulsions between these electron pairs by maximizing the distance between them.
