Insomnia Therapy

Insomnia therapy encompasses behavioral, pharmacological, and sometimes combined interventions used to improve sleep initiation, sleep maintenance, and daytime functioning in people with persistent insomnia. Behavioral treatment, especially cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), uses stimulus control, sleep scheduling, and cognitive restructuring to strengthen sleep cues and reduce arousal, while medications act through targets such as GABA-A receptors, melatonin receptors, or orexin signaling. In pharmacology, comparing these mechanisms, onset and duration of action, adverse effects, tolerance, and interactions helps guide individualized treatment and safer prescribing. Therapeutic outcomes include shorter time to fall asleep, fewer nighttime awakenings, and improved daytime performance.
