Propulsive Motility

Propulsive motility is the coordinated movement of material through a tubular organ, particularly the gastrointestinal tract, and is important for digestion, absorption, and elimination. It occurs when waves of smooth-muscle contraction develop behind luminal contents while muscles ahead relax, a pattern regulated by the enteric nervous system and modified by autonomic signals and local chemical stimuli. In pharmacology, propulsive motility provides a framework for understanding how prokinetic drugs enhance transit, how antidiarrheal agents slow intestinal movement, and how medications can contribute to constipation or altered gastrointestinal function. Measuring these effects supports drug development and the treatment of motility disorders.

Propulsion and Thrust

Source: Alexander S Rattner; Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Aircraft, rockets, and ships produce propulsion by accelerating surrounding fluid or high temperature combustion products to high velocity. Because of the principle of conservation of momentum, the increased fluid velocity results in an effective thrust force on the vehicle. The thrust capabilities of propulsion systems are often measured with static thrust tests.

Rocket Propulsion in Gravitational Field - II

A rocket's velocity in the presence of a gravitational field is decreased by the amount of force exerted by Earth's gravitational field, which opposes the motion of the rocket. If we consider thrust, that is, the force exerted on a rocket by the exhaust gases, then a rocket's thrust is greater in outer space than in the atmosphere or on a launch pad. In fact, gases are easier to expel in a vacuum. A rocket's acceleration depends on three major factors, consistent with the equation for the...

Recently available video recording and spatiotemporal mapping (STmap) techniques make it possible to visualize and quantify both propagating and mixing patterns of intestinal motility. The goal of this protocol is to explain the generation and analysis of STmaps using the GastroIntestinal Motility Monitoring (GIMM) system.

An Introduction to Cell Motility and Migration

2023

Cell motility and migration play important roles in both normal biology and in disease. On one hand, migration allows cells to generate complex tissues and organs during development, but on the other hand, the same mechanisms are used by tumor cells to move and spread in a process known as cancer metastasis. One of the primary cellular machineries that make cell movement possible is an intracellular network of myosin and actin molecules, together known as “actomyosin”, which creates a...
