Urinary Acidification Effects

Urinary acidification effects describe how lowering urine pH alters the renal elimination of drugs and other weak electrolytes, making urine chemistry an important pharmacological factor. In the renal tubules, acidic conditions increase protonation of weak bases, reducing their lipid solubility and passive reabsorption; weak acids generally become less ionized and may be reabsorbed more readily. This pH-dependent ion trapping can change drug clearance and duration of action, although its magnitude depends on the compound’s pKa, urine flow, and renal function. Understanding these effects supports interpretation of drug interactions, toxicology findings, and selected approaches to modifying urinary excretion.

Gut Acidification Monitoring Assay: A Technique to Study the Acidification of the Intestinal Lumen in Drosophila using Bromophenol Blue Dye

2025

This video demonstrates an assay to monitor gut acidification in Drosophila flies. After the ingestion of food supplemented with a pH indicator dye, the acidification of the intestinal lumen results in a change in the color of the dye. Visual inspection of the digestive tract of the flies to examine the color change provides evidence of acidification.

Generating Urinary Tract Infection Model: A Technique to Administer Uropathogenic Bacteria in Mouse to Develop Urinary Tract Infection Model

2025

In this video, we describe the technique for the intravesical administration of uropathogenic bacteria to generate a urinary tract infection model in mice. This model can be used to understand the spread of uropathogenic bacterial infection within the urinary system and the mechanisms that determine UTI susceptibility.
