Diving Board Example

A diving board is a flexible platform that stores and releases mechanical energy, making it a useful physics example of elasticity, oscillation, and projectile motion. When a diver applies a force, the board bends; its elastic potential energy then converts into kinetic energy as it returns toward its original shape, while the board’s stiffness, mass, and length influence its natural frequency and motion. The diver’s timing and position affect the board’s deflection and launch velocity, linking material behavior with human movement. Studying this system helps explain energy transfer, equilibrium, vibrations, and safety considerations in engineering and sports science.

Introduction to the Power Pole Board

2023

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. DC/DC converters are power electronic converters that convert DC voltages and currents from a certain level to another level. Typically, voltage conversion is the main purpose of DC/DC converters and three main types of conversion exist in a single converter: stepping up, stepping down, and stepping up or down. Among the most common step-up converters are boost converters (Refer to this collections...

2014

Detailed instructions are provided on how to train rats to voluntarily dive underwater through a 5 m long Plexiglas maze. Because the brains of rats have been very well characterized, voluntarily diving rats may help elucidate the central pathways of the mammalian diving response.

Novel Tank Diving Assay: A Method to Study Innate Stress Responses in Zebrafish

2014

Body segmental inertial properties are required for inverse dynamics modeling. Using an oscillation and reaction board technique, inertial properties of below-knee prostheses were measured. Using direct measures of prosthesis inertia in the inverse dynamics model of the prosthetic leg resulted in lower magnitudes of resultant joint forces and moments.

This protocol describes the modified hole board, which is a behavioral test set-up that comprises the characteristics of an open field and a traditional hole board. This set-up enables the differential analysis of unconditioned behavior of small laboratory mammals as well as the analysis of cognitive abilities.
