Energy Basics

Energy is the capacity of a system to cause change or transfer heat, motion, or other forms of work, making it a foundational concept in physics. It appears as kinetic, potential, thermal, chemical, electrical, and nuclear energy, and can move between systems or transform from one form to another while the total energy remains conserved. Studying these transformations helps explain phenomena ranging from falling objects and electric circuits to engines, waves, and planetary motion. Energy basics also provide the foundation for analyzing efficiency, designing technologies, and understanding how physical systems interact across scales.

Chemical reactions, such as those that occur when you light a match, involve changes in energy as well as matter. Chemical changes and their accompanying changes in energy are important parts of everyday life. The macronutrients in food undergo metabolic reactions that provide the energy to keep bodies functioning. A variety of fuels (gasoline, natural gas, coal) is burned to produce energy for transportation, heating, and the generation of electricity. Industrial chemical reactions use...

Basic Postulates of Kinetic Molecular Theory: Particle Size, Energy, and Collision

The ideal-gas equation, which is empirical, describes the behavior of gases by establishing relationships between their macroscopic properties. For example, Charles’ law states that volume and temperature are directly related. Gases, therefore, expand when heated at constant pressure. Although gas laws explain how the macroscopic properties change relative to one another, it does not explain the rationale behind it. The kinetic molecular theory is a microscopic model that helps understand what...

Websites are fundamental digital platforms that represent businesses, organizations, or individuals in the online world. As virtual storefronts, they create the first impression and establish an online presence that can significantly influence potential customers. Websites incorporate various content types, such as text, images, videos, and interactive elements, to effectively engage visitors and convey critical information. This content is typically organized to display product and service...

What is Energy?

The universe is composed of matter in different forms, and all forms of matter contain energy. The different forms of energy on Earth originate from the Sun — the ultimate energy source. Plants capture light energy from the Sun, and, via the process of photosynthesis, convert it into chemical energy. This stored energy from plants can be harnessed in many ways. For example, eating plant products as food provides energy for our body to function, and burning wood or coal (fossilized plants)...

Free energy—abbreviated as G for the scientist Gibbs who discovered it—is a measurement of useful energy that can be extracted from a reaction to do work. It is the energy in a chemical reaction that is available after entropy is accounted for. Reactions that take in energy are considered endergonic and reactions that release energy are exergonic. Plants carry out endergonic reactions by taking in sunlight and carbon dioxide to produce glucose and oxygen. Animals, in turn, break down the...
