Gravitational Potential Energy

Gravitational potential energy is the energy an object possesses because of its position in a gravitational field, providing a way to describe how gravity can do work. Near Earth’s surface, its change is approximated by ΔU = mgΔh, where m is mass, g is gravitational acceleration, and Δh is the change in height. As an object rises, gravitational potential energy increases; as it falls, that energy can convert into kinetic energy, with total mechanical energy conserved when other forces are negligible. This concept helps analyze falling objects, orbits, pendulums, and energy transfer in mechanical systems.

Potential energy is not just a property of each object, but also a property of the interactions between objects in a chosen system. For each type of interaction present in a system, there is a corresponding type of potential energy. The total potential energy of the system is the sum of the potential energies of all the objects. Potential energy can be classified into two major categories: gravitational potential energy and elastic potential energy. The potential energy associated with a body's...

Since gravitational force is a conservative force, the amount of work done to move an object between two points in the gravitational field in which it resides is independent of the path taken. Thus, similar to the gravitational field, a gravitational potential energy function can be defined, which depends only on spatial coordinates. Consider a mass gravitationally bound to another object. For example, the Earth is gravitationally bound to the Sun’s gravitational field. The potential energy of...

Consider a system comprising several point masses. The coordinates of the center of mass for this system can be expressed as the summation of the product of each mass and its position vector divided by the total mass: Suppose the point masses are replaced with an extended object with uniformly distributed mass. The coordinates of the center of mass for this object can be obtained by replacing the point mass with the differential mass element and the summation with an integral in the equation...

The energy stored by a structure and location of matter in space is called potential energy. For instance, raising a kettlebell changes its spatial location and increases its potential energy. Similarly, a stretched rubber band contains potential energy which, under certain conditions, can be converted into other forms of energy, such as kinetic energy. Chemical bonds that form attractive forces between atoms also contain potential energy, called chemical energy. When a chemical reaction...

Cell Potential and Free Energy

Thermodynamics of a Redox Reaction Thermodynamics is the branch of physics dealing with the relationship between heat and other forms of energy. In an electrochemical cell, chemical energy is converted into electrical energy. Thus, a link can be predicted between cell potential, free energy change, and the equilibrium constant for the reaction. Cell potential can also be measured as the oxidant or the reducing strength, and similar acid-base strength measures are reflected in equilibrium...
